Last evening, I needed to do a quick run to the store(s) to pick up some gifts I hadn't got a chance to get yet. I met S in a parking lot at the soccer training facility, I took 2 kids from him (he had a party to go to) and took the one at soccer and made my way to the store. One complained constantly that they just wanted to go home. "Can't we just go home?" "Why do we have to go anywhere?" One was/is completely wild with the excitement of the season and was all over the place and the other was quietly waiting and doing what was needed. The one I really needed along (the one that loves to shop and has definite opinions about things) was dancing. We finished up one stop and I wondered if I actually should just drive home and leave them all there but decided not to as I want them to share in the process. As we went into the next store, I realized that we must look a bit odd. AJ was wearing shorts, LJ had on pants that were way too short (boy has he grown in the last little while!) and bare feet in crocks. Apparently S had argued with him about the need for socks and boots and LJ was having no part of it so S decided to take the natural consequences approach which didn't seem to phase LJ in the least (but did seem to make a lot of people wonder what type of parent would let their child outside in the winter in crocs). I was tempted to hang a sign around their necks stating why they were dressed the way they were ) We did get several stares as we walked through the store, rode the escalator and found our items and I couldn't decided which child was eliciting them the most! They all got into shopping, found things for the people we were looking for (and some extras). Even my one that is such a homebody, decided he liked being there and also decided "I really like clothes now. Last year, I didn't care but lately I really like how things look and the style." Another Christmas miracle! Perhaps he will actually decide to dress nicely instead of just grabbing anything that fits. When we got home, they got busy wrapping things and today were eager to put the tags on. We didn't get a lot done in terms of school which means we will be working over break (we already were needing to) but sometimes its really important to savor the moment and breathe in the holiday spirit when you get a chance.
