Tonight we participated in the Halloween party at the Y where I work three days each week. The kids had a great time choosing their costumes, trying on various things and then heading out to the party. LJ was very excited to be a cow and kept saying "MOOOOOO" An adult was also wearing a cow costume at the party and he ran across the gym to her and got very excited and started cracking up. He was laughing out loud pointing at her and yelling "MOOOO" It was quite hilarious. Throughout the evening, the kids enjoyed various carnival games, cookie decorating, spider creating and jumping in the blow up bouncer and slide. It was a great ending to a very busy day.

My little cow fell asleep on the way home and stayed asleep through the transition from car seat to bed. Poor tuckered out little guy!

Going back in time

The kids' history curriculum is currently focusing on the time frame around 500AD and a recent chapter focused on Christianity coming to England, St Augustine and the Medieval Monasteries. We have been having a lot of fun with various activities in the materials provided and the kids have especially enjoyed the meals/cooking activities linked to the chapters. This evening we had a "Monk's dinner" completed with split pea soup and crusty bread. My plan had been to make the kids monk's robes and have a little more fun with this meal but the reality of single parenting about half of the last 3 months while Steve is out of town working every other week has meant that there isn't the extra time required to make some of these things happen. I decided to proceed with the "Monk's meal" and squeeze it in between piano lessons and a Halloween party at the Y.

All was going well til I put the soup in bowls on the table. Lets face it....split pea soup is not that visually appealing. I was waiting for the middle two kids to comment but they grabbed their bread, started soaking up their soup and had little to say. L stared at hers. Pushed the spoon around and kept making comments about the smell and eventually the taste of it. She complained also about the bread. She is usually the soup lover and the middle two complain so this was an interesting twist. They kept saying "We like this" and that seemed to prompt her to even further complaining. LJ seemed to follow his big sister's lead in the less than stellar review of our dinner. He took one bite. Wasn't too sure. Put his bread in and took another bite. Proceeded to throw the bread across the table and it landed with a loud splat in front of AJ which sent much laughter and noise resounding through the dining room. I reminded them that monks ate in silence but that was lost in the joyful noise that my monks were enjoying. He then picked up his bowl and dumped the remaining contents on the table and placed the bowl upside down on it. He had made his opinion known. As L continued to complain, I decided to use this as a great teaching moment. We reviewed how the monks worked hard, were up early to pray and to work and that they were likely very grateful to finally be able to eat after feeding all the people that lined up outside their gates. As we talked, L poked away at her dinner and then replied "If I were a monk.....I would be grateful for this dinner! BUT..........I am NOT a monk!" Point taken.

This look can be translated as "are you really going to make me eat this disgusting looking and smelling stuff! I am NOT a monk!"

Beginning of a new era

Yesterday, the play of LJ and A-girl was interrupted by LJ crying. Both L and I came from other rooms and asked "what happened?" A-girl replied her usual "I don't know why he is crying." Typically after a few more probing questions we still wouldn't know what truly happened and would give lots of hugs and kisses to mend the "hurts" Yesterday, however, as A-girl was answering and LJ was having his tears wiped away, I asked him if he was hurt (as we always do) and he replied "A-girl...push" A-girl did her best to try and say she didn't, however it was very evident she had and she wasn't' able to stop laughing. Busted! We have assumed that that has been going on but now LJ is talking so much more and the battle ground of sibling rivalry has taken on a whole new dimension.

All in a name

Tuesday as we were driving tot eh Y, AJ asked me why we named LJ the names we did. I went on to explain why each of their names was chosen and what it meant to us. I started with L and then ended up with LJ saying that his first name meant "light" Before I could even finish my explanation of his full name, AJ exclaimed "Momma! I think you should change his name!! He is NOT light!!" I went on to explain that it didn't mean light as in weight and went on to explain about the light within all of us, letting your inner light shine etc and within seconds realized that naming him something meaning "huge, loveable, heavy boy" would have been a lot easier!
