Late this afternoon, I made a cake to go with the berries and whip cream we had for desert this evening. I set it on the stove to cool and went about preparing for dinner and the evening activities. S called and I ran downstairs to look something up on the computer for him and then hurried back upstairs. As I started up the stairs, LJ was coming down the stairs and greeted me with a huge grin, his face dabbled with chocolate cake crumbs.

"Taste the cake Mom! Good cake Mom!"

AS I turned into the kitchen at the top of the stairs I saw the pile of crumbs all over the floor and the half eaten cake! Boy can that kid devour a cake!

"Sorry Mom for eatin your cake Mom!"

Friday marked the end of a long battle against breast cancer that returned after several years of remission and then spread through K's body. She beat the initial cancer and beat the odds when she was told that she couldn't have children and went on to have three beautiful kids. One boy is 6 months older than L and the other 6 months younger and then a little girl AJ's age. When her cancer returned a couple of years ago, she fought very hard but her body finished her fight Friday night just 10 days after her birthday. K was a very special person. I met her through my friend B at UND and we shared many great times throughout the years. She was an incredible mother and it breaks my heart to think of those three gorgeous children growing up in this world without the special love and caring of their mother. My thoughts and prayers are with their family as they start to walk this new journey of life. We will miss you K, but you have a special place in our hearts.

Although you wouldn't know it by today's weather, things here have been pleasantly warm this past week. The kids are very excited for the warmer temps and when the thermometer hit 80 late last week, they decided a water fight was in order. They wanted to pull out the pool for the back yard and when they were told that they couldn't, they improvised and found their own way to enjoy water and the warmer temps.

One of the Y's that I teach at, recently added an aqua climbing wall so L tried it out at an open house last weekend.

This past week, a local 5 month old baby, traveled to Boston for a risky heart procedure. We all dressed in orange in support and prayer for baby S on the day of his surgery. He did well and they are hoping to return to MN very soon.

An incredible gift

Today was a very wet, dreary day. S had left early for a bike ride event with friends that was not going as it should. They were rained on, hailed on and had to stop when the thunderstorms hit spreading lightening throughout the skies and making things less than safe for their ride. I had managed to get all 4 kids to church on time and taught in the kids' program. We had stopped at the grocery store to pick up some things I needed and it wasn't the prime time to be there. This kids were hungry and tired and so was I. We were gathering up our items and one of the staff was carrying a plastic bucket with flowers in it. She handed me a bouquet of beautiful red roses and told me they were for me adding that any Mom of 4 could use some flowers and that she couldn't sell those ones anymore so thought I should have them. What a gift. They were absolutely beautiful. They were not perfect, had blemishes and were starting to wilt but to me, they were wonderful. Her kind gesture brought a smile to the faces of all 5 of us and will continue to throughout the coming days as they brighten our home and fill it with the fragrance of fresh roses. Thank you, for reminding me once again of all the beauty in this world. We can often get caught up in all the tasks of the day and lose sight of all that is beautiful, wonderful and incredible in the world around us. Thank you.

My family surprised me with an early birthday present earlier this week. S has been looking for a Wii Fit for our family but they seem to always be sold out when we are in the stores. Much celebration was had the morning we got it and it has continued to be a lot of fun. I didn't think we really needed a Wii system but I must admit that this is getting me motivated to exercise at least a little each day.

They also surprised me with a new camera. It is so great to be back behind the lens!

I had a great birthday! Lots of sunshine, celebrations, fun and 3 cakes! What more could anyone ask for?!

Once again, I am presented with the ability to learn to do things early in the holiday season rather than leaving it to the last minute. I would love to say that when this life lesson presents itself with each and every holiday that comes and goes, that I would eventually take heed and learn from it. I try but life just gets in the way. It is hard to buy goodies from the Easter bunny when you are with your kids pretty much 24/7 and therefore I am always left scrambling. Today was a madhouse and once again I caught myself saying "Never again. Next year I will......" but in reality I know full well I will be living life to the fullest and in my very full life, I doubt that things will change that much. I ended up hitting three different stores along with many others leaving things til today and all of us finding very little left. The pickings were extremely slim and mostly nut filled so I was beginning to think the Easter bunny would be leaving eggs filled with dry pasta, rice, crackers and veggies. I did manage to find one bag of jelly beans (I had found 2 but gave one to the cutest little grandma) at one store, some chocolate eggs at the other and the dye for egg decorating at yet another.

I'm sure my kids won't really notice or care and will be lost in the excitement of the egg hunt. They have enjoyed decorating eggs, (once LJ figured out they were not balls and should not be tossed to the floor much to the frustration (insert huge emotional response) of his siblings. They have made shape cookies and are going to ice them in a bit.

Sending Easter greetings from our house to yours!

LJ's language skills continue to develop in leaps and bounds and we are often left amazed at what he says. He is a parrot and trying to convince the older kids not to use certain words and phrases is always an issue but he talks so much more than any of the others did at this same age. I know I have said this before, but I assumed he would be slower in the speech development and he is surprising me almost daily. I assumed that because AJ was delayed, had severe dysfluency issues when he finally did start combing words which he has luckily grown out of and A-girl has some sound pronunciation errors that make her at times harder to understand than her younger brother.

Here are some recent things he has said:

While I was changing a rather solid deposit in his diaper, he exclaimed with great amazement and excitement "Momma! A snowman!!"

After a day of play in the sandbox and during a diaper change, "Sandbox on my penis!!!"

LJ has had congestion for about 3 weeks now (like his momma...allergies likely) and therefore is more tired, easily frustrated and has a hard time getting going in the morning. He had been bugging me for more juice but knows the "one glass" rule but was being persistent. After several attempts that didn't get the response he wanted from his momma, he yelled "Give me juice right now you big meanie girl!!!!"

Since he's been feeling rough, the toilet training has not been very successful. Yesterday as I attempted to convince him to leave the diaper off, he was not wanting anything to do with that and yelling and screaming so I left the room in the hope that he would calm down and we could resume our conversation/interaction. Instead, he came running after me, pants around his ankles screaming "Put a diaper on my penis right now!!!!" I figure that anyone who can express themselves that well should no longer be in diapers!

Today is my Dad's birthday. I wish I was able to celebrate his 85 years with him in person but I am not so will celebrate with him in spirit from another country. Over the years, I have learned so much from my dad. I have learned a love and respect for nature and the earth. I have learned a lot about family from him as well. He is a very quiet man but when he speaks, his few words carry volumes. Volumes of emotion, knowledge and passion. He is not well educated, isn't a world traveler yet he is wise, very very wise. He has seem so much in his lifetime. He has lived the effects of the depression, of poverty, of war, of the death of a spouse and caring for children alone, illness and seen many changes in his life time. He has traveled by horse, vehicle and airplane. Gone from huddling around the radio for entertainment to the television and to the computer (but we haven't got him using one yet). He is such a wealth of knowledge, of history and of life experience. I feel there is so much I don't know about him yet. I wish we were closer so that he could have a different relationship with my kids, so that I could have him take a much more active role in our life as well.= but I am grateful for all he has been for me and all that he has provided in my life. I love you Dad! Have a great birthday!

This morning, I joined 2 other moms from our home school group and we headed to the annual state wide MACHE home school conference. I have never been and had no idea what to expect. I have been to the other state conference (MHA) but it is a much smaller event in a small venue held in the same location each year. There are very few vendors but great sessions. I thought this one would be similar but was not prepared for the magnitude of this event. We arrived early to attend the used book sale. It filled several meeting rooms and that alone was enough to leave someone in overwhelm/over stim mode. We then ventured into the vendor area and checked out a few things. Many folks buy all of their school needs at this event and prior to actually being there, I couldn't figure out how or why one would do that. It became very obvious to me after today. No shipping costs, able to look through things, ask questions and talk with others about products makes it a great spot for one stop shopping. Crowds in the first part of the morning were big but didn't seem that bad. As we tried to make our way to the first session, we were shoulder to shoulder and the hallways were packed. It was then that my friend J told me there were 6100 people at this conference.....good thing she failed to mention that prior to that or I may not have joined her! It was a great day and it amazes me how going to a conference is so draining physically and emotionally but it was. The three of us had fun together and also joined up with 4 other moms from our home school group at lunch. I also saw several other people that I know from teaching home school swim and gym classes at the Y, nature classes we have been in, field trips and other home school classes. I have a headache, am tired and ready for bed but will get up early and venture out for the final day. Hopefully it will prove as valuable as the first.

This is looking into the vendor area. Classroom areas were 2 auditoriums, 5 ballrooms and 8 meetings rooms. The used book area filled 2 additional ballrooms and hallways.

This afternoon, LJ fell asleep too late and slept too long so when I was arriving home from work at bedtime, he was just getting up. This did not bode well for me having kid-free time to accomplish a number of tasks. Instead, he is running full steam around the house still and I have accomplished very little. At least he is entertaining....too bad we are too tired to truly enjoy him, all his unending energy and all of his wonderful expressions, words and antics. As he and I were unloading the dishwasher, we were having a little conversation (he is becoming quite the chatter box) and all of a sudden he asked "why?" to something I had said. Without thinking, I responded giving him an explanation to which he then asked again "why?" This carried on for several more exchanges before I realized that he had just entered the "why zone" Initially it was quite funny to think this little guy was asking "why?" to everything. Now after a half how of constant why asking, it has lost some of its charm. Our little guy is growing up. He is quickly leaving toddler behind and entering the full on boy stage!

Thanks to T, who loaned me her old camera, I am back behind the lens again in the same way I was before. Now if I could just shake this week long cold/laryngitis and feel better, I could catch up on stuff!
