This evening, in the Halloween festivities, LJ got a small box of Hot Tomales. He was instantly drawn to them and kept asking to eat them. I figured he wouldn't like them and after many requests, I finally told him to go ahead and eat them. We had gathered with a few friends late in the evening, and as we were talking he put one in his mouth.

"These make me close my eyes!" Then with eyes watering yet no attempt to empty his mouth of his hot treat he exclaimed "There is a fireplace in my mouth!!!!"

The best part was a few moments later as he took another one for himself, he gave our friend J one and she ate it. Then with eyes watering she looked at LJ in disbelief as he popped another one into his mouth, closed his eyes and again had a fireplace in his mouth. She told us that those had to be the hottest candies she had ever eaten. There was LJ stuffing them into his mouth and enjoying every moment!

Still grinning despite the watering eyes.

Other fun things that LJ has said:

This morning, AJ woke up and we heard him using his "scary pirate voice" talking about "Fred" a prop in our friends' haunted house that upset LJ so much when he saw it in their living room earlier in the week and made them put it in the garage so he could walk by the spot it was sitting in to get to the basement. All of a sudden LJ exclaims "AJ! Come into bed with me!! I'll save you!!!"

Later this evening, as he was helping me put in a load of laundry before bed, he was getting a little rambunctious and impatient. I said to him "Hold on to your horses!" and he exclaimed "Horses!!! I don't have any horses!" and proceeded to shuck more clothes onto the floor.

The things that come out of that kids mouth are more often than not, quite hilarious!

Happy Halloween

Yesterday as we were trying to get out the door to run some errands and be back in time for a Halloween party in the afternoon, the kids were doing various things in the livingroom, porch and spilling out into the front yard as I ran back into the basement to grab something.

All of a sudden I heard "You broke the lamp! You are in big trouble!"

I sat caught off guard for a moment as we don't have any lamps in the living room and I couldn't figure out what they were talking about. The girls cam running downstairs to tell me that AJ had broken the lamp. I asked for clarification and they told me he had broken the light (on the ceiling fan) in the porch with his football. My initial reaction was frustration as we have told him numerous times not to throw balls in the house.

I came upstairs and saw the mess. The compact florescent bulb had shattered everywhere. There was glass in shoes, coats, windosills and all over the place. From the mess, my gaze shifted to a little boy, standing with his hands in his pockets, looking down at the floor.

"Hey buddy......didn't we talk about throwing balls in the house?" I asked.

"But I DIDN"T throw it in the house. I was OUTSIDE!"

After quickly doing a check on the glass door to the porch to make sure it was intact, I looked back at him wondering if we were now going to have a discussion on the semantics of my last statement (I didn't throw it....I kicked it) or if we were going to have to have a discussion based on honesty and truth. Before I could even ask anything further, he went on to explain....

"I was on the sidewalk and kicking the ball towards the bushed by S and T's house. LJ opened the door and it went in and broke the light!"

That seemed so far fetched it had to be true! As I stood there trying not to crack up, knowing he would never be able to do that again in a million years if he tried to purposely do it, LJ pipes up "I hold the door momma....and ... and....the ball come in and go smash on the light!!"

Unbelievable. It has made for great conversation lately though!

Standing on the sidewalk, kicking the football towards the trees behind the slide and it ends up in the open front door of the porch?!?!?!

Unbelievable!!

Today was an awesome fall day weather wise. The sun was shining and although the morning temperatures started off cool, the temperatures warmed up and it was dry. We took a break from our scheduled activities and squeezed in some time to enjoy this great fall day. The kids were also enjoying the change of weather and the ability to run in large spaces so my hope of the ideal fall photo didn't happen but we had a fun half hour nonetheless.

This afternoon marked the addition of a second pirate to our family. The kids were talking about costumes again and what they were going to wear to a trick or treating event at our neighborhood grocery store and LJ announced that he wanted to be a "little pirate" Much to his older brother's excitement (AJ loves to dress up as a pirate and since he has done it for a couple of years now he has a lot of pirate "stuff"), LJ was ushered into the pirate ranks in style. AJ laid out a bunch of things in their room and had LJ choose and then he dressed him. It was great entertainment watching LJ come running out of the bedroom wielding a duct taped plastic sword and growling. It has been fun watching these two boys bond in different ways the past several months as LJ gets older. They are constantly wrestling and roughhousing and you can truly see the admiration in LJ's eyes as he looks up to his brother and wants to do what he is doing whether it is kicking a soccer ball, throwing a football or tormenting his sisters. It isn't surprising that he chose to be a pirate just like his big brother.

We are not sure where he honed his sword skills!

L made her poodle skirt with the help of A this past weekend and has had a great time wearing it to various Halloween related things including dance class this evening and the grocery store.

Today marked the first meet of the season for L and AJ. It was a different kind of a meet in that not only did three teams (114 athletes) compete in a suburb about a half hour away but they also competed virtually with kids across the nation. I'm not sure they exactly understood what they were doing but they had a blast anyway.

Several new kids have joined the team so they were able to have relays and that adds to the excitement. L had a regional qualifying time at the end of last season and was very excited to maintain that time and qualify for regions again this year at the very first meet. She is also trying different races this year (they are only allowed three per meet) so is excited about that possibility as well.

AJ's strength again this year appears to be his back. He qualified for the regional meet last year in the final meet to qualify and with some work may be able to do that again as he is 0.7 seconds away.

Poor A-girl watched longingly from the side anticipating when she will join the team. She and two other siblings are sitting in the wings. These girls are all in kindergarten and determined not to be left behind their older siblings (one of the other girls is the youngest of three and the other the 4th of 5 and they are driven). Hopefully the coaching staff is ready for them!

LJ has been in a really bad cycle of sleep lately (or rather non-sleep.) He gets up really early (5:30) and then ends up falling asleep in the afternoon. For him, this means he doesn't go to bed well that night. He is in his pajamas and ready for sleep at the regular time, however sleep doesn't come easily and it ends up in an evening fiasco that ends some time between 10 and 11:00. This translates to a very long day for me and my non-kid hours that I need for school prep, household tasks that are best completed without the help of the two year old tornado fall behind.

This morning, when I had not got the sleep I needed and my day was starting much to early and not necessarily in the fashion I had hoped, I attempted to throw in some humour (I admit it wasn't good but the result was pretty entertaining).

Me: Hey buddy, You did a great job getting in the bathroom and now we just need to get in the potty. Did you miss my memo on that?

LJ: Whats a memo?

Me: A note with instructions.

LJ: after a brief pause as he thought things through. Memo. Mummo. I love my mummo!

It is so much fun to watch and listen to him process language and change things, add them into his vocabulary. Each and every day he keeps us smiling with something he says....and given our house there is always something he can twist or say differently that provides us with a lot of laughs.

Guess we we were?

Last evening, AJ had a chance of a lifetime. He plays flag football in a small league in our area of the city. In a special arrangement with our local NFL team and the parks and rec department, the 8 teams were able to play a game last night in the Metrodome. He has been so excited, counting down the days til his big night. The excitement may have even turned into some pre-game day jitters as he just wasn't himself.

The field was divided into half and they ran two games at once. AJ's team played the second half and enjoyed a practice/scrimmage for the hour before his game. All the kids were so excited at the chance to run around on the field. One of the highlights for AJ was being able to kick a field goal. They enjoyed this incredible experience.

Due to lighting and the major limitations of my camera, it was hard to really get any good, crisp and clear photos but we had a great time.

AJ is #14

The kids all seemed to like to roll around on the turf. At first I thought it was just my kids til I looked around and saw almost every other kid doing it as well. Since the field was divided and the kids played width wise rather than lengthwise there was a nice section at the 50 yard line between the "fields" for the kids to play.

After a couple of hours of football, these guys needed a good game of Trouble.

It seems like this fall has been very wet and dreary. I love the colors of fall and enjoy taking photos of the colorful leaves, seasonal decor and celebrating the changing of the seasons through annual traditions and photos. This year this just isn't happening. We finally found a day that wasn't raining )or snowing) to go to the apple orchard and after I took the first 3 photos, my card was full. UG!

We had a great time picking apples, tasting the crisp, juicy apples, going on a wagon ride to the pumpkin patch and this year, we ventured into the corn maze. We had a great time.

We have definitely hit our full schedule mode the past few weeks. We have left the low key, not much scheduled days of summer and have hit the busy, back to school, back to work, heavy activity schedule. We are having a great time but some things are sliding a bit. The laundry is falling behind as are the dishes, meal planning has slipped into the background so I am finding us making more frequent trips to the grocery store rather than our detailed menus which prevent this. I am not taking time to update my calendar regularly and things are falling off the radar.

With the addition of another student to our home school daily schedule, comes the need for more prep and planning time, more instructional time and more time just keeping up with the paper that is generated with one more student. All this behind the scenes stuff seems to fall in priority and doesn't always get done.

When this pace and busy schedule happens, I tend to not remember things that I can remember in more easy times even without having it written on the calendar. I start to do things that I would never do when times are not as chaotic.

Today is the perfect case in point. The two older kids had a home school outing this evening to an observatory to look at the night sky. It has been rescheduled 4 times and was to be last Sunday evening but got moved to this evening due to rainy cloudy conditions last week. We got fully absorbed in our own activities today enjoying the awesome weather and the outing was forgotten....til a friend called and S took off quickly to get the kids there hopefully in time to participate. Also today, I managed to take a camera with a full memory card on a family outing. I love the fall colors, sites, sounds and tastes and after snapping 2 pictures my camera was beeping at me. I had never heard that beep before and it took a while to figure out the card was full! I spent the first many minutes going through photos and deleting a lot (even some good ones) just to put some of our outing on there and it was very hard not to be able to capture all the images I wanted to, knowing I had to delete as we went and having to limit my options. Photography is such an outlet for me and due to a very interesting fall (complete with snow before the fall colors) I feel like I have missed nature's incredible colors and m y chance to capture them. UG!

This is a huge flashing neon sign to me that I need to take a better look at things I have going on, prioritize, and take on only what we can manage and follows our passion and purpose. We are so fortunate that we have so many incredible opportunities available to us yet we need to be much more selective. Easier said that done for me but obviously a necessity.

Time to go and sit down with my calendar and make sure this next week is a bit better balanced.

This evening, we went tot he Halloween party at the local nature center. They set up a variety of "stations" for the kids to go through and receive a treat at each one. Once the stations are completed, you can enjoy a drink and cookie while watching a magic show. Then you move into the building and there was a Bingo game and face painting. Outside are more games and a petting zoo. Lots of activity to keep everyone busy. We met friends there and had a great time. The kids really enjoyed the magician so we saw a portion of his performance and then watched it in full. The older kids played Bingo and I took the younger ones to the petting zoo. It was getting dark and poor LJ was absolutely terrified of the animals running around and needed to be held. A-girl on the other hand couldn't' get enough. We finally joined everyone back at the games and headed home.

AJ created this mask to go with his pirate costume this year.

Since it was quite cold this evening, A-girl decided to go as a butterfly so she could dress warmly underneath.

L went as a Roman when she surprisingly found out how much she had grown since last fall and her favorite witch's dress wouldn't fit.

LJ had the warmest costume of all! A friend gave us this when AJ was LJ's age.

Our friend, R was chosen to assist the magician.

On the way to the petting zoo.

While A-girl thoroughly enjoyed herself, this is what LJ looked like (well at least until he started sobbing that he just wanted to go home!)

Heading home.

..........what kind of conversation will erupt in our house.

This evening as I was getting the youngest two ready for bed, the following exchange took place:

LJ: (pointing at A-girl's backside) "You have butt cheeks!!!!"

A-girl: "Are they big?"

Me: (matter of factly as I don't particularly want to bring a ton of attention to this conversation) "Well you don't actually want big butt cheeks"

A-girl: (totally confused) "Well why not?!?! You do!"

Thanks. Lovely. Really lovely.

Last Friday, the kids had their monthly science class at the nature center and learned all about apples, making cider and seeds. At one point in the discussion, the naturalist talked to them about how the apple blossom has 5 petals and those become the ovaries. Each petal, if pollinated will have one or two seeds in the ovaries. The kids have been spewing back information from that class throughout the week. If they sets seeds on their clothing from playing outdoors, they discuss whether it is a dropper, a flier or a cling on. I have to smile as I listen to them talking about what they learned in the class. I must say though that hearing them talk about ovaries still catches me off guard. It always takes a couple of minutes to realize I did hear correctly and they were referring tot he class information. Usually it is a split second time delay between the comment and my connection to be on board with the discussion. Today, however, took a little longer. We were in the van and AJ had grabbed an apple on the way out the door. There was much banter back and forth between all the kids and then from the back seat I hear "I'm going to bite into the ovary!"

Gotta love learning!

Grandpa A left this morning after a two week visit. He was fully immersed in the chaos of our family. At times our home is so loud one can't even think, the kids are in constant motion and it feels like if you watch them for one more second your head will spin off as it makes you crazy dizzy to try and watch them. At times it feels like there is absolutely no control, that the arguing, name calling and bugging siblings couldn't get any worse and then miraculously it does leaving you wondering if there will be anything nice done or said in the future. Then as quickly as it escalated, it calms and you will see and tender quiet moment, all of the kids will be engaged in one game or activity and there is harmony and deep deep love. Such is life in our family. I can't help but think that anyone joining into that for an extended time would think that we are totally insane.

We enjoyed our time with you Grandpa and hope that you did too.

Smoothies have become a regular part of our meals lately so it is common to hear "I am going to make a smoothie." or "can we make a smoothie"

This evening, the kids were watching some of the DVD of their dance recital. Everyone else was in bed and L was watching the finale. S started dancing across the living room to sit beside her on the couch. I commented on how Daddy could shake his bootie and perhaps they should do the Daddy Daughter dance at the next recital. L got very excited about the possibility. I then went into the kitchen to put some things away. Out from her bedroom comes a not very tired Miss A-girl who asks "Did someone just say Daddy was going to make a smoothie?!"
